Belle et Sébastien et amour des choses française

A tumblr devoted to the band Belle & Sebastian (and like-minded twee tunesters), my cats Belle & Sebastian and the love of all things French. In relation to the latter, due accord shall be given to the series of novels called Belle et Sébastien by French film actress, author, screenwriter and director Cécile Aubry, which were subsequently made into a live action series of the same name and a Japanese anime series, initially known as Meiken Jolie.

Yes indeed.

OK. I haven’t done a Serge Sunday for a while. I think I need to pull out the big guns for this one.

Serge Gainsbourg - Relax Baby Be Cool (Live with Bijou, 1979)

This live version with French band Bijou is my favourite version of this track. As any fan of Serge knows, he often loves to play mind games with both his guest vocalists and audience. The twist to this upbeat sounding track with the key title phrase in English is that if you have no regard for the French lyrics you miss that the backdrop to this flirt session in which the object is told to “Relax Baby, Be Cool” is in fact a disturbing scene of morgues, the KKK and streets streaming with blood.

Lesson? Never underestimate Mr Gainsbourg in even his seemingly most pop moments.
